Straight out the gate, Lupita Nyong'o took the Screen Actors Guild and Critics' Choice Award for her premiere appearance in American cinema, Steve McQueen's 12 Years A Slave. Although she is Kenyan, she was born in Mexico, has citizenship there, and speaks Spanish, as her father, a Kenyan politician, was a visiting lecturer in Mexico City at the time of her birth. Even while she earned a degree at the prestigious Ivy League college Yale, she starred in a Kenyan TV series and directed a Kenyan documentary film. Read more
