It's 4th of July again, which means red, white and blue season in the United States. As the US Army begins its retreat from the volatile Iraqi battlefield, and the financial crisis (which many countries around the world have blamed America for causing it) is starting to clear up, it's becoming a little easier to be proud to be an American. With the young and chic Barack Obama celebrating his first Independence Day as President of the United States, Americans everywhere are looking for new ways to show that they still believe in the good ol' US of A.
Flags and barbeques are only the tip of the iceberg. This 4th of July is all about the bling. American women will be wearing everything from flashy patriot earrings in the shape of ribbons, rockets and Uncle Sam hats (all colored red, white and blue, of course) to less conspicuous ornaments such as elegant silver medallions, pearly star shaped earrings and silver pendants with garnet stones designed by Israeli handcraft jeweler Sarit Wolfus.
But it doesn't stop there. Some people who are really "crazy for liberty" choose to hold their wedding day on the 4th of July, to make that special day just a tad more special. That doesn't mean you have to a wear tacky wedding dress designed like the fifty states, but it does mean you can show off some sparklers: precious quartz stones in various colors and diamond or excellence cubic zircona earrings can definitely jazz things up when you're walking down the isle to the sound of fireworks.
But don't think that women are going to have all the fun. This 4th of July, men are up for a real treat as well. A trend that started last year and has been gaining momentum ever since will reach its peak this 4th of July. The key word is cufflinks, and it's the latest craze in patriotic fashion. After Italian designer Herzog revealed his liberty star 18k cufflinks, made especially for this occasion, it seems that every cufflink designer wants a piece of the action (and the profit, naturally).
The world is changing. Some say that America is not what it used to be and that it is about to step down as the most powerful nation in the world and lose its influence on global affairs. But with all its flaws, it remains a proud nation. This Independence Day, Americans be they poor or wealthy are going to make a slightly bigger effort at expressing what makes this great nation so great.
